At least 11 people, including two children, were killed in the early hours of Wednesday in Kalimedu near Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, after an overhead high-voltage cable came in contact with a temple chariot during a procession.

The injured were shifted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital
Investigations have revealed that at the time of the accident, the victims were participating in a chariot procession organized in the memory of the Tamil Vegan Thirunavukkarasar by a local prayer house created and conducted by the villagers for more than nine decades.
The 25 to 30 feet electric light bulb in the cart was unexpectedly connected to a high voltage wire passing through the village at 2-45 p.m.
In this, the idol of Upperperuman (Thirunavukkarasar) placed in the cart was damaged when the cart caught fire during procession near Thanjavur.
The decorated hand-drawn carriage was returning to the hall after the culmination of a long procession that began Tuesday night.
Procession near Thanjavur: 10 died on the spot and 13 were rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
Later, at around 7 am, one of the injured, Paranitharan, 13, died at the hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lamented the death of 11 people during a chariot pilgrimage in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu.

விபத்து நடந்தபோது, ஒன்பது தசாப்தங்களுக்கும் மேலாக கிராம மக்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டு நடத்தப்பட்ட உள்ளூர் பிரார்த்தனை மன்றத்தால், தமிழ் சைவத் திருநாவுக்கரசரின் நினைவாக ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்ட ரத ஊர்வலத்தில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் கலந்துகொண்டதாக விசாரணைகள் தெரியவந்துள்ளன.

10 பேர் சம்பவ இடத்திலேயே இறந்தனர், 13 பேர் தஞ்சாவூர் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனைக்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டனர்.
பின்னர், காலை 7 மணியளவில், காயமடைந்தவர்களில் ஒருவரான பரணிதரன், 13, மருத்துவமனையில் இறந்தார்.
