Tamil New Year 2022 / Puthandu 2022 in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, 14 April. Puthandu, according to the Hindu calendar, is the first day of the traditional Tamil New Year. It is also known as Varsha Pirappu. This year, it falls on April 14, 2022.

Tamil New Year’s Day is celebrated on the first day of Chithirai – the first month in the Tamil Calendar and is also known as Varusha Pirappu.

Tamil people celebrate Puthandu, also called Puthuvarusham, as the traditional “Tamil/Hindu New Year”. This is the month of Chittirai, the first month of the Tamil solar calendar, and Puthandu typically falls on 14 April.

Tamil Puthandu is a festival observed to mark the beginning of the Tamil New Year on the tamil month of Chithirai 1st. Chithirai is the first month of the Year in Tamil Calender. This special day is also known as Puthuvarudam or Varsha Pirappu. Tamils of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Tamil people across the globe celebrate this festival on the first day of the Chithirai month with great cheer and enthusiasm.

The month of Chithirai consists of 31 days. In the English calendar, April 14th to May 14th is the month of Tamil Chithirai. The entry of the Sun into the zodiac is the lunar month. It is also the beginning of the new year as it is the first month of Chittirai.

சித்திரை மாதம் 31 நாட்களைக் கொண்டது. ஆங்கில நாட்காட்டியில் ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 14 ஆம் நாள் முதல் மே மாதம் 14 ஆம் நாள் வரை தமிழ் சித்திரை மாதமாகும். சூரியன் மேட இராசிக்குள் நுழைவது சித்திரை மாதப்பிறப்பு ஆகும். அத்துடன் சித்திரை முதல் மாதம் என்பதால் இதுவே புதிய ஆண்டின் தொடக்கமும் ஆகும்.
